Steve Summer, Alican Seren, and Janet Wong Repeat as Mercy College Student-Athletes of the Month
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) and junior Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey/Vincennes College) have been selected as Mercy College's co-Male Student-Athletes of the Month for May, while freshman Janet Wong (Vancouver, Canada/Crofton School) was named Female Student-Athlete of the Month. All three are repeat selections after earning the award for April.
Seren went 2-0 in singles play at the No. 3 spot, and was also a perfect 3-0 in doubles play at No. 3 with Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey). Both singles victories came in the first two rounds of NCAA Tournament action. He posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Costas Efstathiou of Queens in the opening round and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph versus Lukas Beman to help Mercy upend No. 31 and host Kutztown in the second round. In doubles, Seren and Tukel rolled to 8-2, 8-4, and 8-6 wins over Queens, Kutztown, and Armstrong Atlantic State, respectively.
Summer, a 6-foot-1 first baseman, wrapped up his campaign by batting .318 with two doubles, two home runs, a team-best six runs batted in and a .682 slugging percentage. He also stole two bases in two attempts and scored a team-high five runs. Summer smacked his first home run of the month in a 2-for-5 performance at Bridgeport on May 1, and closed out the year with another round-tripper, a double and three runs batted in during Mercy's 9-2 win over Queens on May 6.
Wong closed out her stellar rookie campaign by winning the East Coast Conference (ECC) women's high jump championship with a school record mark of 1.52 meters and the women's javelin championship with a throw of 35.58 meters. She became the first female ever to represent Mercy College at the ECAC Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Princeton University.
