Mercy College Athletics Selects "Mavericks" as its New Nickname

DOBBS FERRY, NY -   Mercy College Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss announced that "Mavericks" has been selected as the new mascot/nickname to represent the College and the department's 15 NCAA Division II programs and student-athletes.  The new mascot/nickname and logos were unveiled at the Dobbs Ferry Campus Graduate Salute in the Hudson View Café on Tuesday, May 15.

"A maverick is someone who exhibits great independence in thought and action-a maverick is a leader," said McGinniss. "The nickname Mavericks truly embodies the spirit of Mercy College and Mercy College athletics. It's a nickname that the entire Mercy community can be proud of and rally around."

As part of Mercy's "New Beginning" and to further develop the identity of Mercy College and its athletics program, the department embarked on selecting a new mascot/nickname beginning in the Fall of 2006, to replace "Flyers."  Suggestions from Mercy College students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends were submitted and reviewed by the Choose the New Mascot/Nickname Committee.

The list was then narrowed down and sent out to Mercy College constituents for feedback.  The committee cut the list to a final five, and after careful consideration, "Mavericks" emerged as the top choice to replace Flyers and represent Mercy College and its athletics programs. Over 400 people participated in the process.  (Joining Mavericks as finalists were: Mustangs, River Hawks, Cougars, and Wildcats.)

The new logos were designed by The Silverman Group, based in New Haven, CT. "Marc Jacobson and his team at The Silverman Group were fantastic to work with. They did a great job of capturing our ideas and provided wonderful input throughout the process," said McGinniss.

The new mascot/nickname will be implemented immediately for all of Mercy College's athletics programs. To view the new Mercy College Mavericks logos, please visit
