Mercy's Chanze Wellington, Nicole Steinburg and Hans Peter Gartner Named to NYCAC Honor Rolls

            DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College student-athletes Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY), Nicole Steinburg (Averill Park, NY) and Hans Peter Gartner (Vienna, Austria) have been named to the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, and Men's Tennis Honor Rolls, respectively, for the 2005-06 season.  The trio received the award for demonstrating excellence both in the classroom and on the court.

            Wellington, a sophomore, carries a 3.26 cumulative grade point average while majoring in criminal justice.  He started 16 of 18 games played for the men's basketball team this past season, averaging 31.2 minutes per contest. He scored 10.1 points per game and finished second on the squad with 27 three-point field goals made, shooting 34.5 percent from beyond the arc. Wellington was Mercy's leading scorer in five different games, averaged 2.1 rebounds per game, 1.9 assists per game, and shot 84.4 percent from the free throw line.

            Steinburg closed out her collegiate career with a 3.23 cumulative grade point average as a psychology major. She played in all 25 games as a senior, starting 24, and averaging 34.0 minutes per game. Steinburg ranked third on the team with 10.8 points per game and connected on a team-best 50 three-point field goals, shooting 32.7 percent from long distance. She also averaged 4.3 rebounds per game, 1.48 assists per game, and her 2.0 three-point field goals made per game ranked fourth in the NYCAC.

            Gartner also finished his collegiate career with a stellar cumulative grade point average, posting a 3.59, while majoring in psychology. Ranked No. 5 in the Fila East Regional rankings, he was an All-NYCAC First Team selection, leading Mercy to a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and a share of the NYCAC regular season title. Playing at the No. 1 singles spot he posted a 7-5 record that included a victory over nationally ranked Rodrigo Teixeira of Concordia during the regular season. Gartner also teamed up with freshman Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) for a 6-6 record at No. 1 doubles.

            Mercy College is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II institution and a member of the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC).
