Mercy College Student-Athletes Selected to Participate in Title IX Symposium

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Interim head softball coach Jacqui Huffman and five Mercy College student-athletes have been selected to take part in the Title IX Symposium 2006, presented by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and the MARGARET Fund of the National Women's Law Center (NWLC), on Monday, May 1, 2006.  The event will take place at SUNY Purchase, beginning at 8:45 a.m.

Mercy's student-athletes and other Mercy College students will first assist with registration before joining the program. Those in attendance along with coach Huffman will be: senior Amanda Lewis (Yonkers, NY) and freshman Katelyn Klobus (Babylon, NY) of the cross country/track and field program, sophomores Jessica Madick (Elmsford, NY) and Jamie DeJesus (Sleepy Hollow, NY) of the softball team, and Tannyka Bent (Queens, NY) who plays with the women's basketball, soccer and softball teams.

Along with Senator Clinton, other scheduled panelists include Michelle Fisher (Con Edison Electrical Engineer), Joseph Skrivanek (SUNY Assistant Chemistry Professor), Jocelyn Samuels (V.P. of Education at NWLC), Julie Foudy (Olympian, Public Policy Officer, Women's Sports Foundation), Benita Fitzgerald (Olympian, President, Women in Cable Telecommunications), and Dr. Dot Richardson (Olympian, Orthopedic Surgeon). Topics will not only include Title IX and athletics, but how the law is related to math, science and technology as well.

Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that requires gender equity for males and females in every educational program that receives federal funding. The MARGARET Fund of the NWLC conducts public service, informational campaigns designed to educate the public about Title IX. For more information, visit www.nwlc.org.
