Mercy Softball Drops a Pair to Dowling, 8-5 & 12-1
The Mercy College softball team lost a pair of games to Dowling College 8-5 and 12-1 on Saturday. The games were home games for the Mavericks despite being played in Oakdale due to weather. Game one saw the Golden Lions push two runs across in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, junior outfielder Krissy Lacik (Edison, N.J./Edison) continued her torrid hitting and ripped a double and came in to score to bring the Mavericks within 2-1. Dowling scored five runs across in the second and added a run in the fifth to take an 8-1 advantage into the sixth. Mercy scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as junior infielder Steph Owsiany (Edison, N.J./Edison) drove in a run on a bases loaded groundout. Her classmate, Kim Curry (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central), recorded the Mavericks third run of the game with an RBI single that scored Chelsea Methot (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central).
In the seventh, Lacik picked up her second hit of the game and came around to score when freshman Ashley Johnstone (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) laced a double that scored her and Methot. Freshman Alex Oakes (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) took the complete game loss and got tagged for all eight runs, only three of which were earned.
Game two saw four different Mavericks record hits , with Curry scoring the lone run. With the losses, the Mavericks hold a 12-20 record (5-13 ECC). Dowling improves to 29-11 (16-2 ECC)
The Mercy College softball team goes on a five-game road trip before returning home on Friday, April 23, to face Molloy in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
