Rafael Matos joins the Mercy College women’s basketball coaching staff during the 2015-16 season.
Matos brings a wealth of basketball experience to the coaching staff after a successful collegiate playing career and high school coaching stint. Born in the Bronx, Matos moved to the Poconos in Pennsylvania while in middle school and went on to a have successful high school career at East Stroudsburg North High School. While a member of the team, Matos led the team in free throw and three-point percentage during his junior and senior years.
After graduating high school in 2006, Matos attended and played basketball for Sussex County Community College in New Jersey. Matos averaged 14.9 points per game while at Sussex, placing him top 10 in the conference.
Following two years at Sussex, Matos received a scholarship to play and attend William Penn University in Iowa. Matos played two years at William Penn as a key role player and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.
Matos began his coaching career after graduation at his old high school, East Stroudsburg North High School, where he was the Junior Varsity Boy’s Basketball coach and worked for the school district as a Teacher’s Aide.
Matos also has experience working camps like Hoop Group and the 76-Sixers camp. Matos recently moved back to the New York area to be closer to family and now works as a substitute teacher for the Bronx Public School District.
