Deirdre O'Neill was named the Mercy College head field hockey coach on March 1, 2016.
O’Neill joined the Mercy College staff in the fall of 2015, when she was named the assistant field hockey coach and the media relations assistant.
O’Neill led the Mavericks to a record-breaking season in 2016, as their first year as full members of the ECAC. The Mavericks set a school record for most wins in a season and earned their first-ever berth into the ECAC DII Field Hockey League Tournament.
O’Neill’s players have racked up numerous weekly honors, ECAC Second Team honors, and recorded ECC Offensive Player of the Year and ECC Defensive Honorable Mention recognition after the 2016 season.
The Mavericks also excelled in the classroom, earning NFHCA DII National Academic Team Award, recording 14 named to the NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad, five tabbed to the NFHCA DII Scholars of Distinction, and 13 named the ECAC All-Academic Team.
Before joining the Mavericks, O’Neill played for the State University of New York at New Paltz, where she helped lead the Hawks to three NCAA tournament appearances, along with three consecutive SUNYAC Championship titles in 2012, 2013, and the 2014 season. In her final season, O’Neill notched nine goals and added eight assists for 26 points. She was named to the First-Team All-SUNYAC, SUNYAC All-Tournament Team, and among the SUNYAC leaders, she tied for fourth in assists, tied for fifth in points, and ranked 10th in goals.
O’Neill graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations and Communications from SUNY New Paltz in 2015, and is pursuing her Master’s Degree at Mercy College.
