Dr. Astrid Mel assumed the role of Faculty Athletics Representative during the 2012-13 academic year in addition to her responsibilities as Coordinator of the newly formed Exercise Science program.
Dr. Mel studied as an undergraduate in her native Montreal, Canada at Concordia University, where she also began her involvement in intercollegiate athletics, playing on the women’s soccer squad. After leaving Concordia, she played and coached in the W-League, a women’s soccer developmental association, for the Rochester Ravens and the Laval Dynamite. Dr. Mel also coached soccer and women’s lacrosse at William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. before moving on to become the head coach for Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She returned to pursue her graduate education at Springfield College, completing both her Master’s in Advanced Level Coaching and Ph.D. in Exercise Science while assisting with the women’s soccer team.
She was honored at the 2014 Senior Awards Banquet as the recipient of the Dr. Ann Grow Friend of Athletics Award.
